Nigel Foster has designed a number of sea kayaks. Three composite “touring” models currently produced by Seaward Kayaks are the Legend, Silhouette and Shadow, each at almost 18 feet.

The hulls feature a shallow arch between hard chines to facilitate easy edging for rapid turns and good directional tracking when held upright. Seaward meticulously handcrafts the Foster Kayaks ensuring a high quality in the production and a superbly finished kayak.

All of Foster's designs incorporate three storage compartments, two with large hatch access, and his hallmark "day-hatch", a smaller compartment behind the cockpit accessed via a smaller round hatch, an arrangement now much copied in the industry. All anchor points for deck lines and `bungee cords' are recessed, and a recess for a compass is positioned ahead of the front hatch for easy viewing when on the sea.

The Legend is the classic kayak Foster most commonly uses for his kayak handling demonstrations at Sea Kayaking symposia around the world because of the precision with which it can be maneuvered. (for information about the videos, click here) It’s a well-balanced kayak that can be positioned accurately in windy conditions and in waves and it encourages the learning paddler into ever-higher levels of skill. Designed to have a manageable volume for expedition paddling without being bulky, it maintains its playful maneuverability when un-laden to fully laden, although both the initial stability and the waterline beam increase with load.

The Silhouette is a sleek and attractive low-profile kayak with the snug fit so beloved by "Greenland" enthusiasts. The Silhouette tracks easily with a slightly longer waterline than the Legend.

The Shadow, a larger version of the Legend, offers all the easy and precise maneuvering characteristics of the Legend but with increased initial stability.
